INSURANCE COVERAGE FOR PODIATRISTS

OHIP provides partial, limited coverage for registered podiatrists in Ontario, while private extended health insurance covers the remaining costs or care provided by chiropodists.

OHIP Coverage Details

Standard visits: OHIP covers $7 to $16 per visit for services by a registered podiatrist, up to a maximum of $135 per patient per year.

X-rays: An additional $30 is covered for related foot X-rays.

Surgeries: Surgical procedures performed by podiatrists are not covered by OHIP.

Private Insurance and Extended Health

Private plans: Most private insurers (such as Manulife, Sun Life, Green Shield, and Canada Life) offer partial or full coverage for podiatry and chiropody services under paramedical benefits.

The Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) in Ontario covers approved podiatry services for work-related foot injuries or conditions.

Coverage Details

Work-Related Injuries: WSIB covers professional treatments if your foot condition results from a workplace accident or occupational injury.

Fee Schedule: The WSIB maintains a specific Fee schedule: Podiatry - WSIB, outlining approved costs for services like initial assessments (Code A005) and continuing treatments (Code A006).

Approval Requirement: Treatment must be pre-authorized or submitted through an approved claim related to an active WSIB workplace injury.
